BMFA Slope Soaring Qualifications

For all tests you must know your BMFA Safety Rules which appear in the BMFA Handbook, which will have been sent to you on paper, but is available online on the BMFA site

The “A” certificate Silent Flight Slope (for a complete description see the BMFA online summary here)

The examination for the above may be taken with any registered examiner or chief examiner. The candidate must successfully carry out the following flying test.

  1. Carry out pre-flight checks as required by the BMFA safety codes.
  2. Launch the model and gain height
  3. Fly for ten seconds straight and level across the slope.
  4. Fly for ten seconds straight and level across the slope in the opposite direction.
  5. Perform one 360 degree left hand turn.
  6. Perform one 360 degree right hand turn.
  7. Perform two 360 degree thermal turns either left or right.
  8. Fly into wind and perform a straight stall and recovery.
  9. Fly a rectangular circuit in front of the slope in the opposite direction to that chosen for the landing approach
  10. Fly a rectangular landing circuit opposite the direction chosen in (i) and land within twenty meters of the pre-designated spot.
  11. Remove the model from the slope and carry out post flight checks as required by the BMFA safety codes.

All manoeuvres except the landing to be carried out in front of the slope.

The above schedule is treated as one test flight and must be completed in one attempt, two attempts per examination will be allowed in any one day.

In addition to the flying schedule, the candidates must answer a minimum of five questions on safety matters based on BMFA guidelines and safety codes for model flying and local flying rules (if you don't know where to find these, they are in your BMFA Handbook - for more details see the BMFA Website. There are a list of Mandatory Questions and a quiz you can take.

The “B” certificate Silent Flight Slope (for a complete description see the BMFA online summary here)

The candidate must already hold an "A" Certificate. It is possible to take both the "A" & "B" flight tests consecutively, then answer the "B" questions.

    1. Carry Out Pre-Flight Checkas required by the BMFA Safety Codes
    2. Launch the model, gain height and complete one horizontal circuit (either left or right hand) in front of the pilot.
    3. Fly a horizontal figure eight with the crossover point in front of the pilot.
    4. Fly two consequitive loops across wind
    5. Fly crosswind left to right and complete a stall turn away from the slope
    6. Fly crosswind right to left and complete a stall turn away from the slope.
    7. Complete 10 seconds straight and level inverted flight across wind
    8. Perform one axial roll across wind, either from the left or right.
    9. Perform one axial roll across wind in the opposite direction to (h), rotating in the opposite direction to (h)
    10. Perform a three turn spin with exit in the same direction as the entry.
    11. Fly a left hand rectangular landing approach and overshoot
    12. Fly a right hand rectangular landing approach and overshoot.
    13. Fly a rectangular landing approach either left or right hand and land within 15 metres of a pre-determined spot
    14. Remove model from landing area.
    15. Complete post-flight checks required by the BMFA Safety Codes
